Thinking Through Systems

Class Activity Week 5b

In class, we watched a video of a public street crossing in Japan. In groups, each of us take notes and analyze from the observational data. I recorded data available about human interactions including demographics, activities, things or systems interacted with.

First, I noticed a lot of people from different age groups. Old, young, teenagers and adults. Mostly east asian male and female Japanese and very few foreigners. From group discussion, we also found that a lot of the people were business workers. Mostly seem to be from lower to middle classes.

There were also a lot of interaction going on. People interacting with different objects such as the traffic light. Although everyone seemed to be quite attentive with their surroundings, there were some that were constantly on their phones, some making calls, and a few riding bicycles. Regarding the systems, it would be systems that define how people dress, restrict movement and integrate technology.

A problem that we thought was that, since it was quite sunny and bright it might be difficult to look at the pedestrian signals. We thought adding some shade and more trees might help.

This is an image of a map of the situation that we created. Taking note of the placement of objects and spaces as well as people and their movements.
